Any of various medium-grained to coarse-grained metamorphic rocks composed of laminated, often flaky parallel layers of chiefly micaceous minerals.

(shĭst) A metamorphic rock characterized by a very fine alignment of its minerals, which allows it to be easily split into flakes or slabs. Because schist often contains abundant mica, it usually has a shiny, gray appearance. See Table at rock.
