The result has been an upsurge in output of very light liquid fuels variously described as light condensate, drip gas, pentanes plus or natural gasoline, which compete head one with the light naphtha traditionally produced by oil refineries, an essential component in the production of both motor gasoline and petrochemicals.
In the first three months of 2012, the United States exported 10 million barrels of "pentanes plus," almost all to Canada, compared with less than 1 million barrels in the corresponding period last year, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the independent statistical arm of the US Department of Energy.
Ecomate is completely miscible with other blowing agents and is said to provide insulation value between that of HFC-245fa and pentanes. Moreover, its price is comparable to hydrocarbons, and like them it is flammable.
These have been produced using Oxid technology that overcomes the inherently low solubility of pentanes in polyester polyols and also allows for higher functionality.

These liquids are entrained in the gas stream and are extracted in a variety of ways to produce the liquid products ethane, propane, butanes, pentanes and other higher molecule hydrocarbons.
There is also the newer methylformate based Ecomate from Foam Supplies, Inc., offered alone or blended into systems and priced in the same range as pentanes. Ecomate is said to provide insulation between that of high-performance HFC-245fa and pentanes.
That compares to $2/lb for HFC 134a and 50 cents to 90 cents/lb for pentanes. HFC-245fa is also gaining ground in spray foams for insulating roofs, wails, tanks, and spas, as well as production of discontinuous metal panels.
In North America, most flexible-faced laminators are converting to pentanes, while most appliance makers have switched to non-flammable HFC-245fa.
The choices now under consideration are HFC-245fa, HFC-134a, water, pentanes, and combinations of these.
Pentanes have been shown to perform comparably to HCFC-141b and now appear to be serious candidates for these applications.
As HFC alternatives raise doubts, pentanes attract new interest in North America.
