(mo͝on′stər, mŭn′-, mün′-) A city of west-central Germany north-northeast of Cologne. Founded c. 800 as a Carolingian episcopal see, it was a prominent member of the Hanseatic League after the 1300s. Today it is an industrial center and a canal port.
