(hä-fĭz′, -fēz′) Full name Khwajeh Shams al-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi. fl. 14th century. Persian poet whose sensuous rhyming couplets, many of which celebrate love, wine, and nature, are traditionally interpreted allegorically by Sufic Muslims.
