The epidermis of the inner or ventral mantle surface is continuous with the epidermis of the body of the conch, contains numerous mucus cells, and may form folds in Lobatus gigas, whereas the epidermis of the outer mantle surface, continuous with the exterior surface of the visceral mass, has sparse mucus cells, shorter epidermal cells, and may be more heavily
sinuated while typically not forming folds (Hyman 1967).
