The other differential diagnosis would be submandibular lymph node, plunging ranula and a second branchial cyst.

A broad spectrum of lesions can be considered in differential diagnosis: infections, ranula, obstruction of the submandibular duct, tumors of the sublingual and other minor salivary glands, lymphadenopathy, thyroglossal duct cysts, lymphatic malformations, epidermoid cysts, neurofibromas, hemangiomas, heterotypic gastrointestinal cysts, foregut duplication cysts [1, 4, 5, 9].

Mucocele (also known as ranula or salivary gland mucous cyst) of the newborn has been extensively reported in Literature [1-3].

Ranula or sublingual sialocele is retention cyst arising from occlusion of sublingual salivary duct or gland.

In conclusion, education of the community by way of local and mass media on the issue that branding and similar harmful practices (ranula excision, cutting babies with razors to treat jaundice, salting newborns) are not appropriate is still a significant necessity for our country.

Clinically, these lesions may be classified as mucocele or ranula. Mucocele consists of a volumetric increase caused by the accumulation of mucus inside the tissues.

Ikarashi et al reported that a 1-KE injection of OK-432 in a patient with cervical cystic lymphangioma had little effect, but 4 months after the patient received a second injection of 3 KE, computed tomography showed a complete disappearance of the lymphangioma.16 Watari et al injected 0.1 KE for a ranula and reported no shrinkage 1 month later; a second injection at the same dose resulted in shrinkage 2 to 4 weeks later.
