- A distinctive form of late-medieval shield (apparently produced originally in Pavia), flat, more or less oblong in outline, but sometimes with a convex top edge, with a wide, flat, raised medial band, hollowed out at the back, extending from top to bottom. In later use sometimes applied to any large shield. In plural.
