Arondekar lists suggestive literary examples here: The Story of Dildoe Queeney; The Ups and Downs of Life, Love, and Safety; journals such as the Pearl, the Boudoir, or the Venus in India, whose popularity, Arondekar was told by the head librarian at the University of Bombay archives, "rivaled that of the Bible in Colonial times" (106, 108).
There is an earlier reference to Moll Howard in the poem "Signor Dildoe," published in 1678, which has been attributed to the Earl of Rochester though the attribution is now disputed.
