Babesiosis is caused by the intraerythrocytic protozoan genus Babesia. (1) Most cases in the United States are caused by Babesia microti and have been reported in the Northeast and upper Midwest regions.
In the midwestern United States, the principal vector for Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) and babesiosis (Babesia microti) is the Ixodes scapularis tick, which has been documented in 77 of 92 Indiana counties (Indiana State Department of Health [ISDH], unpublished data, 2018) (1).
More recently, also routinely checking for Babesia microti, I am shocked by how frequently they appear; and only about half the patients remember a tick bite.
